I’ve tested a number of electric bikes over the years, but I was particularly eager to try out the Ecotric Seagull model. As an affordable electric mountain bike under $1300, I wanted to see if its performance lives up to the price tag.

After taking it for multiple test rides on trails and hilly terrain, I’m thoroughly impressed with what you get for the money with the Seagull. It packs some serious power and range into an entry-level package.

First Impressions – Unboxing and Assembly

Unpacking the Seagull, I found it comes nearly ready to ride out of the box. The package includes the main frame, front wheel, pedals, charger, tools, and instructions.

Assembly only took me about 30 minutes with the included tools. I had to attach the front wheel, handlebars, seat post, pedals, and front fender.

The process was straightforward and the instructions easy to follow. All the necessary cables and wires were already connected and routed properly.

My initial impressions of the build quality were very positive. The aluminum alloy frame feels sturdy and the hydraulic disc brakes inspire confidence.

Key Specs and Technologies

Powering the Seagull is a 48V 1000W rear hub motor. It’s paired with a removable 48V 13Ah battery that provides a tested range of 30-35 miles on primarily pedal assist mode.

You control the e-bike with a basic LED display, throttle, gear shifter, and brakes. The display shows your speed, battery level, and mode.

It rides on 26″ x 2.125″ CST fat tires with a suspension fork that smooths out bumps. Stopping power comes from Tektro hydraulic disc brakes front and rear.

Key Specs:

  • Motor: 1000W Rear Hub Brushless
  • Battery: 48V 13Ah Removable
  • Max Range: 35 miles pedal assist
  • Top Speed: 24 mph
  • Tires: 26″ x 2.125″ Fat Tires
  • Brakes: Hydraulic Disc Brakes
  • Gears: 7 Speed Shimano
  • Suspension: Front Fork
  • Weight: 68 lbs
  • Load Capacity: 265 lbs
  • Waterproof Rating: IPX4

Riding Experience and Performance

After dialing in the fit and tire pressure, I was eager to see how the Seagull would perform on the trails.

Throttle Response

Twisting the throttle provides smooth, controlled acceleration. The 1000W motor has serious torque to propel you up to 24mph in throttle-only mode.

Handling

The fat tires and front suspension soak up rocks and roots on the trail. The geometry feels stable sweeping through turns on descents.

Comfort

The front shocks absorb impacts well. The seat has springs but could use more padding for all-day comfort.

Range

Using mostly pedal assist on mixed terrain I averaged 25-30 miles per charge. More aggressive throttle-only riding cuts range closer to 20 miles.

Top Speed

On open dirt roads I hit the 24mph top speed in throttle mode. On single track I could still get it over 20mph flying down hills.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent value for the performance
  • Powerful 1000W motor
  • Up to 35 mile range per charge
  • Durable aluminum alloy frame
  • Hydraulic disc brakes
  • Smooth front suspension fork
  • 7 speed Shimano gears

Cons

  • Battery mounted externally
  • Basic display lacks data like odometer
  • Minimal padding in seat
  • Limited adjustments for taller riders

The Seagull hits a sweet spot for newer riders looking to get into electric mountain biking on a budget. It provides an excellent blend of power and range without costing a fortune.

More advanced riders may want a bike with higher end components and construction. Very tall riders over 6ft may find it lacks adjustability to fit them perfectly.

Overall it’s ideal for recreational trail and off-road riding for riders from their late teens up to mid 60s. The fat tires provide stability and the power gets you up hills easily.

FAQs

What is the range on pedal assist?

In pedal assist mode expect 25-35 miles depending on terrain, assist level, and rider weight.

How long does the battery take to charge?

A full charge takes 6-8 hours from empty. Charging overnight is recommended.

What is the weight limit for riders?

The Seagull can support riders up to 265 lbs. The frame, wheels, and components are built to handle heavier riders.

Does it have lights for night riding?

Yes, it has an integrated LED headlight powered by the main battery. The rear tail light is built into the battery housing.

Can you ride it without power?

Absolutely. The 7 speed Shimano drivetrain provides a full range of gears to ride with or without power assistance.

The Verdict

For under $1300, the Ecotric Seagull eBike delivers outstanding performance and value. The potent 1000W motor and long-lasting battery provide an electrifying trail riding experience.

Minor comfort and fit limitations aside, it’s arguably the best affordable electric mountain bike on the market. I highly recommend the Seagull to anyone looking to get off-road adventures started on a reasonable budget.

It provides confidence inspiring trail manners mated to approachable electric assist. I’m excited to continue logging miles of smiles on the Seagull this season and beyond!
